Favorite Scary or Halloween Movies (Spooktacular Day 12)

Welcome back to another Spooktacular day!! We only have today and tomorrow left to celebrate, so let’s have some fun.

Let’s talk about some fun suspenseful or scary movies and TV shows that I have loved from a variety of genres. These picks have all inspired my writing in some way, and since I know you don’t all love scary, I’ve added a few things here that are just mysteries, suspense, or in some way atmospheric.

I’ve tried to include some things that are currently available to watch on Netflix, as well, because today’s giveaway is a 3-month Netflix Subscription! Keep reading to enter.

My Favorites

Earlier this week, I shared some scary books that had an impact on me as a writer, so today, I’m sharing some movies and TV shows that are either scary or paranormal that I have loved or been massively influenced by in some way.

Let’s start with movies. If I had to list my Top 5 favorite horror or scary movies, I’d list Halloween, Skeleton Key (love my twists, what can I say?), Get Out, Hush, and Flatliners. The Craft has to squeeze onto the list, too, and you might as well add Practical Magic. It’s too hard to choose!

For TV shows, I have to list Buffy at the top of the pile. The Haunting of Hill House, American Horror Story (though each season is hit or miss), Supernatural (though I haven’t seen it all still), and The Walking Dead. Lovecraft Country is a newer show that I’ve really loved, too, on HBO.

Fun note here that the stock image house in the background here on the poster is the same as in my Beautiful Demons cover!

I also feel like I need to have a section here for anime or animated series that have meant a lot to me from the horror or suspense genre. Series like Attack on Titan, Castlevania, Trese, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Bleach have been inspiring me a lot lately! (Sword Art Online is one of my all-time faves, but I don’t know if it can count as horror? Let’s count it anyway, because it is suspenseful!)

From My Netflix Watch List

Some of the above titles are on Netflix, but I wanted to create a separate list here of things I’ve watched on Netflix that are currently available there to watch free (in the US, at least) as of the time of this writing. These are not in any particular order, and it’s a mix of shows and movies, but here we go. Feel free to keep adding to it in the comments!!

  • American Horror Story
  • The Conjuring 1 + 2
  • The Forest (not an incredible movie, but it still really inspired me to start a new book a while back that I haven’t finished. I feel there was a lot of potential there, and it’s worth a watch.)
  • The Haunting of Hill House (The twist at the end of this one got me good. LOVE.)
  • Crimson Peak
  • Supernatural
  • The Strangers (Okay, I have to preface this by saying this is the single most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen, and I kind of wish I’d never seen it. Watch at your own peril, because it’s the kind of movie that could really happen to you, and that’s scary.)
  • Unfriended
  • Hush (Truly must watch. Amazing.)
  • Bird Box
  • Sabrina
  • You
  • Alice in Borderland
  • Shutter Island
  • Black Mirror
  • Pan’s Labyrinth
  • The Walking Dead
  • Death Note (the anime not the movie)
  • Stranger Things
  • The Ritual
  • Castlevania (Another must-watch in my opinion. It’s beyond excellent.)
  • Trese (This one is scary close to so many of my own ideas, so naturally I loved it.
  • Underworld
  • Bleach

That list should keep you busy, unless you’ve seen them all!

A few on my to-be-watched list on Netflix are:

  • Veronica (according to Netflix, only 1 out of 100 people make it through this, because it’s too scary. Dare to watch it?)
  • There’s Someone Inside Your House (I had hoped to watch this today for our Teleparty, but it’s been postponed. More details below)
  • Fear Street (all 3)
  • Squid Game
  • Midnight Mass
  • The Haunting of Bly Manor

What do you think? Am I missing some? What are your favorite scary or suspenseful movies and shows?

SCAVENGER HUNT CLUE #12

Netflix Teleparty Event Postponed

Hopefully you saw the news yesterday, but I had to postpone our Netflix Teleparty watch party for today at 1PM. We ended up needing to switch Disney parks days in order to give our little daughter an extra day of rest, so I will now be spending all day today at Hollywood Studios and Epcot.

Sorry to push it back, but let me know if you think November 13th would be a good alternative, and if so, what would you like to watch together?

Thanks for understanding, and thank you again for celebrating Spooktacular with me!

One day remaining, and then I choose a winner for our grand prize of 15 signed paperbacks in the Shadow Demons World. If you haven’t yet entered to win, you can go back to Day 1 and fill out the entry form.

See you tomorrow for our final day of the celebration!

  1. Wow. One day left at the spooktacular event! That was very fun. Thank you! It would be amazing to win all the paperbacks. Good luck everyone!

  2. Hi Sarra, I don’t have Netflix, I have HBO Max. My favorite scary shows were The Originals ( now gone), Legacies, and the new Charmed. I always love movies with Dracula, vampires and now witches and zombies. I don’t know if you ever heard of Dark Shadows but it was in the 70’s I believe, and there were witches, were wolves, vampires and ghosts in this place. I loved watching it as a child. This has been a great spooktacular and I applaud you and everyone who put this together. Enjoy your time with your family. It is also awesome to see fans from all over the world.

  3. I watched Carrie the other night and just been watching the Sream TV series. Trying to watch a few horror/scary shows as I haven’t watched many in a long time

  4. Wow only one day left, it seems to have gone by so fast. Its been really fun. Some of my favourite scary movies include all the Halloween movies, the scream movies, Friday the 13th, nightmare on elm Street, wrong turn, and Ghostbusters. Some that are on Netflix specifically are Zombieland, Walking Dead, Psycho, Ratched, Beetlejuice, the Addams family, scream queens, and so many more that are on my watch list.

  5. Midnight Mass is a good series, a bit strange and slow in places but worth sticking to the end…

  6. I don’t have a favorite (too many to choose from, lol).I love horror movies!
I haven’t seen The Strangers or Veronica. They are on my list for today!

  7. Ok! Lots to say! haha

I LOVE HUSH! It’s not a movie that widely talked about, and I think that’s a true shame. It introduced me to Kate Seigel (the main actress) and I will now watch anything she’s in (in fact I watched Hypnotic last night – it was pretty good – freaky concept). Everyone needs to watch this movie!

Speaking of Kate, The Haunting of Hill House is by far the best horror series I’ve ever seen. It. Is. Unlike. Anything. Else. EVER. Unfortunately, The Haunting of Bly Manor disappointed in comparison. I’ve also heard that Midnight Mass isn’t very good ๐Ÿ™ – so we’ll see if I watch that one.

Now… The Strangers. I 100000% agree with you. My husband and I always list this as the MOST TERRIFYING movie we’ve ever seen. I saw this in theaters and distinctly remember my blood pressure and heart rate rising. And I was watching it with my crush at the time (who did not crush me back lol) and I couldn’t grab hold of him to protect me! haha Definitely watch at your own risk! Along the same lines, I’ll say that The Purge movies are also something that COULD happen in real life… hopefully not in our lifetime, but possible nonetheless. The first and most recent movies are by far the best.

The Conjuring Universe is my favourite (with Sinister 1 and 2 being a close second). These movies could literally plummet to like a 3 star rating on IMDB and I’d still watch them, hoping they rise back to the top!

Squid Game: SO. GOOD. People say it’s incredibly gory… nope. Not for people who watch this kind of stuff regularly haha. I loved it so much that the doll from Red Light, Green Light is my Netflix profile picture!

Thank you for an amazing Spooktacular!!

  8. I’m not really a fan of super scary movies or shows. I’m into slightly scary, suspenseful stuff with a good story. I absolutely loved Haunting of Hill House! Bly Manor was good too, just completely different.

  9. I canโ€™t wait to write these down and see how many Iโ€™ve watched and how many Iโ€™m going to watch my family and I watched Deep House, which after fast forwarding to when they actual dive. We couldnโ€™t stop watching it. Then itโ€™s buffering was deemed endless and we moved on to something else. Still waiting to finish watching it:(

This isnโ€™t a scary movie, but it was so fun and such a good movie. Itโ€™s called โ€œI am Dragonโ€ the 2017 movie. This gave me ideas for my novel and a new favorite of ours.

  10. Attack on Titan! Sarra, you get me. Thanks for the list, some I have not seen and looking for a must watch for tomorrow. Canโ€™t wait to watch the Disney live replay, silly work made me miss. Such a fun spooktacular!

  11. I can’t watch scary movies as they send my anxiety in over drive. Even though I love the shadow deamons I’m not sure how I would go watching it as a show or movie .
I do like witch movies/TV shows

  12. Not a fan of scary movies! But I have loved the Spooktacular! Youโ€™ve done an amazing job on it considering you are doing it by yourself and on the go!
Awesome job! Thank you so much for doing it!

  13. Not a big fan of horror movies but I did watch all the vampire shows with witches. Also loved Bitten when it was out.

  14. I absolutely love all horror movies or movies with a pot twist, get out and shutter island are probably my top movies besides the insidious movies and there’s another but can’t think of the name off hand. But on a side note I cannot believe tomorrow is the last day it seems like its flown by way to fast for my liking

  15. I don’t watch scary shows. I suppose the most scary I’ve watched recently is Stranger Things

  16. I love all kinds of suspense and horror. Today I found something interesting to watch on Hulu that I think I am also going to pick up the book. It’s a psychological thriller called. We need to talk about Kevin .

  17. I don’t watch the really scary movies or TV shows! I guess you could say I like the “cozy scary.” As a teen, I loved Dark Shadows (now you know how ancient I am) and the Johnny Depp movie of that name is OK. I am a big fan of the X-Files, and Ghostbusters, except for that horrible remake with the four women. There is no way I could watch a Stephen King movie. Tried to watch The Shining and The Perfect Storm. Nope. Can’t read his stuff, either.

  18. I love Smallville and Grimm, Buffy the vampire Slayer the originals the vampire diaries Lucifer

  19. Just donated $100 to comfort cases feels good to get back considering that for a short time I was also in the foster care system.

  20. I’ve watched Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I really enjoyed the much darker and sassier version of Sabrina. I’m introducing my bf right now to the classics Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.

  21. It Follows, Jeepers Creepers and as a child Nightmare on Elm Street. I was so terrified of Freddy that I wouldn’t sleep at night, so my parents called the local radio station and somehow convinced them to announce on the radio that Freddy was struck by a car and killed so that I would go to sleep, lol. They still have a recording of it.

  22. I have to admit I have seen most of those, so I guess that’s a good thing. As for Squid Game it was good but in a sick way. I won’t spoil it for you. Happy Halloween!!!

  23. Omg the strangers is my all time scariest movie too!!!

Another favorite of mine is the others!

I wanna watch the haunting of bly manor.
