Favorite Magical Creatures (Spooktacular Day 3)

It’s Day 3 of our Spooktacular Halloween Party, and I hope you are having fun so far!!!! Today, we’re going to chat about our favorite magical creatures in books. Demons, Vampires, Angels, Witches (okay maybe witches aren’t a “creature” but they are a paranormal being). What’s your favorite and why?

My Favorite Magical Creatures in Books

There’s no doubt that when it comes to paranormal beings or humans who are really something more, witches are my bae. I LOVE reading about witches, and when I think about the future of my writing, I can hardly imagine writing anything else. Must have witches!

Some of my favorite witches in fiction are from the Wheel of Time series, though in that epic fantasy series, they are called Aes Sedai. If you haven’t read this very long, very detailed and truly epic series, you really might love it. You may have also heard that Amazon has filmed a TV series of the Wheel of Time that will be coming out next month on November 19th. I’m both nervous and giddy with excitement.

In fact, if you didn’t know, George and I named our daughter, Evie, after our favorite character from this series, Nynaeve. Watch the trailer here.

When it comes to paranormal beings other than witches, though, what really stands out to me?

Demons, for sure. In my Shadow Demons Saga, we get a type of demon that is more like a human. My Shadow Demons don’t come from hell or work for the devil. They don’t possess people in the traditional demon way. But I do like reading about more traditional demons, too.

If you haven’t read my book, The Witch’s Key, I really think you would enjoy it. The demons in that book are very different from the shadow demons like Jackson and Lea. Read the Witch’s Key here.

I also have always had a soft spot for vampires. There are so many amazing books, films, and TV shows that feature Vampires, and to be honest, there have been phases in my life when I couldn’t get enough of vampires. One of the things I love most about vampires as a creature is the fact that the lore is so flexible. Different people have different takes on vampire legends and lore. Garlic bothers vampires in some books, but they laugh at it in others.

And then there’s the vampires that changed everything – Twilight. Sparkling vampires. Never saw that one coming, and though I actually did love the Twilight series (books, not the movies, personally), I am more a fan of dark, dangerous vampires than sparkling ones.

During my Buffy days, I also fell in love with the idea of angels or fallen angels.

One of my favorite Urban Fantasy series, the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter, features a shapeshifting skinwalker heroine who fights vampires. I absolutely love this series. I also really like the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, which features werewolves and other shifters, as well.

I have shifters in my books, too, but I never pushed the envelope before as much as I did in Triton’s Curse, the first of my books in the Willow Harbor series I wrote with some of my author friends. In celebration of this discussion, today’s giveaway is 500 copies of this new adult paranormal mystery romance, featuring a triton (male mermaid) and a witch. Read the description below and grab your free copy on Bookfunnel below. First come, first serve until the copies have been claimed.

Let me know in the comments what your favorite paranormal beings or creatures are to watch or read about. Is there any type of being that you just can’t resist reading about? I can’t wait to hear!

Today’s Giveaway: 500 Copies of Triton’s Curse eBook

I am happy to have a free book to give to everyone today! If you’ve never read Triton’s Curse, this is Book 4 in the Willow Harbor series. All of the books in this completed series are set in the fictional town of Willow Harbor, where strange neighbors and secrets abound.

All 8 of the books in this series can stand alone. I wrote 2 of the 8 books, and I hope you love Triton’s Curse. Here’s what it’s about:

Sometimes freedom comes at a cost…

Triton's CurseAs the last in a line of powerful witches, Eva McKay has been held captive for years by a greedy demon who treated her more like a possession than a human being. Three days ago, she escaped. Sure that he’s out searching for her, Eva runs as far and as fast as she can. That is, until she falls asleep at the wheel and crashes her car in the mysterious town of Willow Harbor.

Once a mighty triton, Nikolas Kosta is now a slave. Ten years ago, he trusted the wrong person and ended up shackled, cursed to live in human form, and the prisoner of a manipulative siren named Selena. Nik resigned himself to his misery long ago, but when a beautiful and secretive woman named Eva crashes near the docks where he works, she awakens something inside him he’d thought was lost.

Both desperate for freedom and a life on their own terms, Nik and Eva are reluctant to open their hearts to anyone. But when the demon tracks Eva down and Nik’s boss demands far more than he’s willing to pay, will they have the courage to trust each other? Or will their freedom be taken from them forever?

Strange Neighbors. Hidden Desires. Small Town Charm. Welcome to Willow Harbor where everyone has a secret. What’s yours?

Grab your FREE ebook copy of Triton’s Curse here.

You can also purchase my final book in this series, Witch’s Mark, for a discounted price here.

If you want to discover some other great authors, you can find out more about the whole series at that link, as well. I do believe some of the books in this series have been placed into Kindle Unlimited, so they may not be available at all retailers. My books, however, are never in KU, so you can find them everywhere!

Scavenger Hunt Clue #3:

Today’s Clue #3: The book is Bitter Demons. Go to Chapter 12 – I Guess I Was Expecting More. What is the 4th word in the 25th paragraph?

I have a special digital download for anyone who successfully completes all 13 clues of the spooktacular. Winner’s names will also be published (with your consent) on the final blog post with a congratulations from me!

All you have to do is read the clue and then go search inside the corresponding Shadow Demons world ebook to find the password of the day. Keep track of the words on a piece of paper or in a notebook, and on October 31st, I’ll open a special google form for you to fill out with all 13 passwords.

(These don’t spell out anything in particular, they are just 13 random words! For purposes of this scavenger hunt, one line conversations or phrases count as a paragraph.)

Good luck and happy word hunting! Don’t have Bitter Demons? You can download it free here in the Beautiful Demons Box Set.

Coming Up Next

I’ll see you tomorrow for Day 4 and our live coffee chat at 4PM on Youtube.

Don’t forget that Saturday at 8PM Eastern, I’ll also be live streaming over in our Coven Discord server as I play the survival horror Playstation game, Until Dawn. This is a pretty scary and sometimes gory horror game that plays kind of like a “Choose your own adventure” film. It features some cool actors, too, like Hayden Panettiere and Rami Malek.

I’ve played it a few times, and though I still make a ton of mistakes (Don’t laugh at me, haha), I love playing this game and it’s one of my favorites. Come hang out and watch my play through as much of it as I can in a couple of hours on our Coven Discord Server. You can also come chat in the “Watch Party” chat channel while I play, or you can get on voice chat.

I totally understand this is way too late for those of you overseas to come join us, but it’s the only time I can play a horror game in my household! I hope some of you will be able to join as I play!

Have an awesome day, grab the free ebook, come hang out with us on Facebook or Discord, and I’ll see you all tomorrow for Day 4!
